Tropical Medicine at OHC

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi; the diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases of animals that can cause disease when transmitted to humans.

Some Facts

Infections of Public Health Concern

Parasitic |  Viral & Bacterial  |  Fungal

Transmitted by insects or animals, through blood, congenitally, or through contaminated food or water, parasitic diseases affect millions of people around the world and in the United States. The parasitic diseases of global importance is malaria. In the U.S., the focus is on certain neglected parasitic infections.

Viral & Bacterial

Viruses and parasites cause infectious diseases such as measles or meningoccal meningitis. Viral and bacterial infections can be transmitted, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. When an infection is transmitted from from sick animals to human, we talk about zoonotic diseases.

Fungal infections such as skin, nail, or vaginal yeast infections are common. More serious are lung infections such as valley fever or histoplasmosis which can affect people living and visiting poor areas. However, people who have weakened immune systems, such as those who have cancer or HIV/AIDS, are most vulnerable.
